The successful preservation of a 4.6-acre parcel on Mountain Road in Readington Township contributes to the expansion of public open spaces and the protection of critical natural resources. This achievement was made possible through the combined efforts of the New Jersey State Green Acres Program, Hunterdon County Open Space Fund, Readington Township, and Raritan Headwaters (RHA), which contributed its Green Acres funding and provided coordination support.
The preservation of this property, though relatively small, is strategically significant as it contributes to Readington’s effort to create greenways throughout the township. It expands the Cushetunk Nature Preserve, a 102-acre open space area along the South Branch Rockaway Creek, a C-1 designated trout-maintenance stream and vital watershed. By securing this land, the project enhances habitat for native wildlife species, strengthens protections for the creek, and ultimately improves local water quality.
The Readington Township Open Space Advisory Board is actively reviewing plans to develop a trailhead on the property, with completion expected by the end of the year. These improvements will create safer and more convenient access to the Cushetunk Nature Preserve, allowing visitors to enjoy scenic views of Cushetunk Mountain to the south and west.
Beyond conservation and public access, this project provides a valuable outdoor learning opportunity for school groups and nature enthusiasts. With improved accessibility, more residents and visitors will be able to experience and appreciate the ecological and recreational benefits of the Cushetunk Nature Preserve.
Raritan Headwaters is proud to contribute to the preservation of open spaces that support clean water, wildlife habitats, and outdoor recreation for future generations.
“The preservation of this parcel underscores Readington Township’s commitment to environmental stewardship and expanding access to open spaces for residents and visitors. It represents another milestone in our long-term vision for a connected network of greenways throughout the Township,” said Juergen Huelsebusch, Chair of the Readington Township Open Space Advisory Board.
