RHA is working with a number of other environmental organizations to pass legislation, known as the Flood Defense Act, that allows municipalities to create and manage stormwater utilities. The bill does not make stormwater utilities manadatory, but allows communities to take advantage of this option. Stormwater utilities would operate similarly to wastewater utilities, and provide a formal means of raising funds to fix infrastructure and reduce polluted stormwater runoff. Our Director of Policy, Bill Kibler, testified in favor of the bill at the Statehouse because the bill will give our communities the tools and funds to protect against water pollution and flooding.
On Thursday, January 31st, the Senate and Assembly passed the Flood Defense Act (A2694/S1073) and sent it to the Governor’s Office for his signature. Please email the Governor to tell him you support the Flood Defense Act and want him to sign it: https://www.state.nj.us/governor/contact/all/
